The purpose of this assignment is to create a magazine cover to practice with text settings in Photoshop. For my topic, I chose to create a magazine about raising chickens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To create this piece, I uploaded a picture of trees as a background image, and brightened the color to contrast with the rooster’s dark colors. I used an original photo of my pet rooster, Wally. I added a white gradient at the top right of the corner to balance and contrast with the black corner by the rooster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I opened the rooster’s picture, selected and masked his head, and refined the edges of his feathers in Select and Mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I chose Goudy Stout, a serif, all caps font for the heading. Since this is designed for print, I chose serif fonts for the heading and payoff texts. I wanted the feather texture inside to show up, so I chose a larger font with more space within the characters. I doubled the font width in the characters panel, decreased the tracking to condense the font. This way, it will fit better on the page, and the feather texture can show up better. to contrast against the backgound, I added stroke and drop shadow layer affects. I alligned the text to the right corner to balance with the rooster at the bottom left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I opened the feather texture image, adjusted the angle and size, and created a clipping mask within the heading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I chose a more generic serif font for the payoff text in the orange color from the feather texture, to create some unity without distracting the viewer from reading the heading first. The orange color contrasts against its dark background, and drawing attention to itself after the heading. I adjusted the payoffs’ tracking, leading, and kerning between the two words to condense the text so it wouldn’t take up too much of the image’s space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beneath the payoffs, I wrote the descriptive texts in a simple, bolded, sans serif with a light grey-blue color from the feathers. The sans-serif style and color contrast with the payoff enough to create visual interest without drawing attention first. I aligned these groups of text with the left edge of the heading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I created a circle path, and selected an orange serif font similar to payoffs’, but it had an italics option. I added outer glow and stroke effects to the “special issue” so it would stand out better against the green background and appear similar in style to the heading. I chose a different style for this because it presents different information than the payoffs, which tell about articles inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third payoff appears different than the others, so it will stand out against both the rooster and the background. I selected a pink color from the rooster’s comb to create unity and contrast with the green background. I copied the effects from the “Special Issue” font to create unity and emphasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To finish, I used the vertical text tool I chose the same font as the descriptive texts, but in a regular, un-bolded style, and selected a brown color from the feather texture for the volume number.
